vaishing cryosphere(2023)

The cryosphere (parts of the Earth that are frozen) is a habitat that has not received much attention but is existential and threatened by climate change. Most people on our planet have neither seen nor entered it. The cryosphere is dwindling and its importance for life on our planet as we know it cannot be overestimated, cannot be considered great enough. Snow and ice feed most of the great rivers in summer, bringing drinking water and preventing drought. When the cryosphere disappears, sea levels rise by nearly 100 metres. The shrinkage is in full swing, we can still stop it, we have to make an effort. The speed of the melting is unprecedented and endangers the economy and the ecology alike, not to mention the beauty. With this installation, artist Yvonne Weber invites viewers to pause and reflect on the significance of the shrinking cryosphere in their lives.

The project was realised with the kind support of the CRYOS laboratory at the Alpole (Sion) of the EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne). The researchers are developing scientific facts for our society on the importance of the cryosphere and concepts to counteract climate change.
